The Great Escape

THE GREAT ESCAPE

As the all-too-short British summer bows out, as darker nights return and yet more tax hikes are announced, it’s no wonder that record numbers of people are abandoning the formerly great ship HMS Britain.

Some 200,000 people, mostly retirees, left Britain for good last year according to the Office for National Statistics.

Typically, a summer break will have fuelled thoughts of a place in the sun and one destination that is gaining in popularity is Cyprus, thanks not only to its climate but also to tax advantages not enjoyed in some popular EU locations, including France and Spain.

Ease of gaining residency, low property costs and good healthcare are among reasons for the island’s growing appeal but the low rate of income tax on pensions is possibly the main factor.

Retired Britons are taxed on their pensions at five per cent above about €3,417 (£2,995) per annum once they have lived in Cyprus for 183 days. Those with high incomes can elect a different system but the smaller your income, the better off you are under the normal system.

Assets held in Britain, such as bank accounts, property and investments, are liable for UK tax but if moved to Cyprus are free of tax. Cyprus also abolished inheritance tax in 2000 and does not levy IHT on property transferred between spouses, as some countries do.

A number of developments planned specifically to meet the needs of Britons approaching or enjoying retirement are now being built on the sunshine Mediterranean island as demand rises.

He said: “With work about to start on construction of Coral Bay’s new €70million marina with berths for 1,000 yachts,
property values in the area are tipped to take off.”

Many investors plan to let their properties on long leases, with a view to moving to Cyprus in the longer term.

Qbe Overseas has a range of properties on its books, with prices starting from about £77,000 for a one-bedroom apartment.
